Free Soil man in possession of suspected meth allegedly swings shovel at female victim.

FREE SOIL — A 63-year-old Free Soil man was arrested by Mason County sheriff’s deputies on charges of felony assault and methamphetamine possession Sunday, July 17, shortly before 11:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of East Michigan Avenue after he allegedly swung a shovel at a female victim, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

Deputies arrived at the scene following a 911 call reporting a disturbance, said Sheriff Cole. “During the investigation, it was learned the suspect reportedly swung a shovel at the female victim and also had suspected meth on him.”

  • 12:12 a.m., (MCSO), one-vehicle crash and warrant arrest, no injury, US 31 south of Free Soil Road, Free Soil Township. A 21-year-old Homewood, Illinois man was arrested on an outstanding Cook County, Illinois warrant.
  • 2:53 a.m., (MCSO), car/deer crash, no injury, Quarterline Road south of Hoague Road, Grant Township.
  • 5:43 p.m., (MCSO), larceny, Mason County Fairgrounds, Pere Marquette Township. The complainant reported the theft of a horse bosal from a horse trailer.
  • 5:48 p.m., (MCSO), ​a 34-year-old Scottville man was arrested on a criminal bench warrant for probation violation following a traffic stop, US 10 and Benson Road, Branch Township.
  • 9:22 p.m., (MCSO), car/deer crash, no injury, Sherman Road north of Decker Road, Hamlin Township.

Sunday, July 17, 2022:

  • 8:30 a.m., (MCSO), car/deer crash, no injury, Millerton Road east of Stephens Road, Sherman Township.
  • 2:24 p.m., (MCSO), a 26-year-old Manistee man was arrested on two outstanding failure to appear warrants issued in Manistee County, 1500 block of West Countyline Road, Grant Township.
  • ​4:18 p.m., (LPD), ​a 62-year-old Ludington man was cited for operating without a license, Foster and James streets, City of Ludington.
  • 10:59 p.m., (MCSO), one-vehicle rollover crash, with injury, southbound US 31 at the Pere Marquette Highway exit, Pere Marquette Township. A 70-year-old Norton Shores man received non-life-threatening injuries after the vehicle he was operating left the freeway and overturned. “Alcohol is likely a contributing factor, and the case remains under investigation,” said Sheriff Cole.
