Det. Sgt. Posma honored by sheriff’s association.

Mason County Sheriff’s Office Det. Sgt. Tom Posma was recently presented with the Michigan Sheriff’s Association’s Presidential Citation and Medal for his 30 years of service in law enforcement.

Posma began his law enforcement career in 1992 after graduating from West Shore Community College with a 4.0 grade point average.  He worked for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office as a road patrol deputy before coming to Mason County Sheriff’s Office in 1994, where he has worked since.

Posma worked road patrol until accepting a promotion to the detective bureau in 1998 and then detective sergeant in 2004, the rank he currently holds.

Posma’s commitment to public safety and justice has not been limited to only Mason County.  In a letter from Robert Blank, former Benzie County Sheriff, regarding assistance provided in the apprehension of a “brutal murder” suspect, Sheriff Blank called Posma’s work as “crucial” in that arrest and eventual conviction.

“Throughout his career, Posma has been recognized for his work related to multiple homicide cases,” Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole wrote in a letter recommending Posma for the award. “Among these involved the death investigations of two children and one infant, which all ended in convictions for homicide.  In addition, Posma headed up two homicides which led to convictions of a total of eight persons for their involvement in those death.

“Furthermore, Det. Sgt. Posma played key roles in the investigations and arrests in cases where law enforcement officers had been shot.”The citation is described as “An honor recognizing outstanding and extraordinary professional and personal service to the criminal justice system and law enforcement profession. The recipient’s activities shall be of such significance as to demonstrate a person’s dedication and commitment above and beyond normal professional duties and interactions.”
