Motorcyclist injured following county line crash.

By Rob Alway, Editor-in-Chief.

GRANT TOWNSHIP — A 74-year-old Wisconsin man was injured Monday afternoon when the motorcycle he was riding crashed at the intersection of Quarterline and Countyline roads on the Mason-Manistee counties line. That area is currently part of the US 31 construction detour. According to Michigan State Police Trooper Matt Demny, the motorcycle was northbound on Quarterline Road and the driver apparently braked too late in order to stop. According to witnesses, the driver went through the intersection and struck a yellow road sign indicating the intersection was a “T”. One of the metal posts holding up the sign was broken in half, Demny stated.

The driver, who is from Franklin, Wisc., near Milwaukee, was wearing a helmet. He was transported by ambulance to Munson Health Care Manistee Hospital and was going into surgery for serious injuries, Trooper Demny stated, adding that it appeared the man had suffered leg injuries. Demny said he does not believe speed was a factor and that there was heavy rain at the time of the crash. He added that the westbound Countyline Road lane is typically a right-of-way lane but has a temporary stop sign due to the detour. He said a vehicle was stopped at that intersection at the time of the crash. Had there not been a stop sign there, as is normally the case, the crash could have been much more serious, Demny said.

Emergency units responding included Michigan State Police – Hart Post, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Grant Township Fire & Rescue, and Life EMS.

The crash remains under investigation.
