Scottville police arrest man with criminal record following prowling complaint.

SCOTTVILLE — A 31-year old Oceana County man was arrested by the ScottvIlle Police Department after multiple complaints of suspicious situation.

Carl Lee Herring was arrested after Scottville Police Department received information about a possible subject prowling in the area of Reinberg and Broadway avenues about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

During a canvas of the area the subject was located, according to Chief Matt Murphy. “The subject provided false information attempting to withhold his identity. Subject was informed he was under arrest and attempted to flee from officers.

“The subject was found in possession of possible stolen items,” Murphy said. “If there are citizens who believe they are missing any items, they are asked to contact the Officer Katrina Skinner of the Scottville Police Department to help identify those items.”

Herring was arrested and taken to the Mason County Jail. 

He is scheduled to be arraigned in 79th District Court on Friday, June 3, 2022, according the Michigan Courts website. Herring is facing a felony charge of assault/resisting/obstructing a police officer and a misdemeanor charge of trespass along with habitual offender, fourth conviction. 

“I would like to thank all the citizens who provided information that helped with the arrest of this individual,” Murphy said. “We live in a great community full of great people looking out for one another.”

Herring has been convicted for three felonies and multiple misdemeanors. Most recently he was arraigned in March of this year for misdemeanor assault and battery. Prior to that he was convicted in Oceana County for attempted assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer. 

His felony conviction sentencings include: 

  • Dec. 19, 2006, breaking and entering a building with intent; Lake County; three years; discharged Nov. 7, 2008. 
  • Aug. 19, 2014, assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer; Lake County; one to two years; discharged on May 2, 2016.
  • Aug. 19, 2014, breaking and entering a building with intent; Lake County; one to 10 years; discharged Aug. 15, 2021.
  • June 25, 2014, controlled substance possession of narcotic/cocaine less than 25 grams; Mason County; one year, three months to four years; discharged May 14, 2018.
  • Feb. 20, 2014, two counts, resisting a police officer; Mason County; one year, three months to two years; discharged on May 3, 2016. 

According to SPD, Herring lives in Oceana County. A March 2022 MCP report lists him as living in Ludington. A 2020 Oceana County Press report lists him as living in Baldwin.
