LASD hires interim superintendent.

LUDINGTON — Ludington Area Schools Board of Education hired Peg Mathis as its interim superintendent during a special meeting Wednesday, Sept. 8. Mathis served 10 years as superintendent of Newaygo Public Schools, retiring in June. She had also served as assistant principal at Kenowa Hills High School in Grand Rapids.

The resignation of Superintendent Jason Kennedy was accepted by the board and will take effect the end of the day on Sept. 12.

The board has contracted with Michigan Leadership Institute to search for a new superintendent. This will be the third time since January 2013 that LASD has searched for a new superintendent. Andrea Large served as superintendent from 2013 until 2017, replacing Cal DeKuiper, and then Kennedy has served since 2017.

Ron Veldman, former superintendent of Coopersville Public Schools, has been hired to served as the owner’s representative for the district’s construction projects. Veldman is currently serving as interim superintendent of Fruitport Public Schools, which is the district that has hired Kennedy as its new superintendent.
