1 dead; 1 critical following US 31 crash.

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — One person is dead and another is in critical condition following a two vehicle head on crash that occurred on US 31 between Townline and Colburn roads Monday evening, August 2, 2021. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene, in front of Stakenas Farms at 11:44 p.m.

According to Michigan State Police Trooper Matt Demny, the crash occurred when a northbound vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a southbound vehicle, killing the female driver of the southbound vehicle.

Extrication personnel from Grant Township Fire Department and Free Soil/Meade Fire Department removed a young  child from the northbound vehicle. Demny said the child appeared to be uninjured and had been in a carseat. The female driver of the northbound vehicle was pinned in and was extricated using rescue equipment. Both occupants of the northbound vehicle were transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.

Speed is currently being investigated as a possible contributing factor in the crash.

The crash closed down US 31 between Free Soil and Fountain roads for four hours.

Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies and crash scene investigators, along with Fountain Area Fire Department, Life EMS ambulance and Mobile Medical Response (MMR) ambulance, assisted at the crash, which remains under investigation.
