Western Michigan Fair a month away.

PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — Activities for the 2021 Western Michigan Fair begin one month from today. Unlike most major events, the fair was not cancelled in 2020, but was scaled back to just livestock competitions and the auction. This year’s fair will include all the traditional events.

Pre-fair activities begin on Sunday, Aug. 8 with Colt Stakes Harness Racing beginning at 4 p.m. The event includes 2- and 3-year-old colts racing for a $45,000 purse. 

More pre-fair activities take place on Monday, Aug. 9: 

  • 9 a.m., horse show
  • 3 p.m., sheep show
  • 4 p.m., harness racing
  • 5 p.m., still exhibit judging (not open to the public)
  • 5 p.m., goat show

Tuesday is the official opening day. 

Tuesday, Aug. 10

  • 9 a.m., swine show
  • 1 p.m., exhibit buildings open
  • 3 p.m., midway opens
  • 4 to 8 p.m., celebration of Smokey the Bear’s birthday, including cupcakes, Hayloft Entertainment Tent. 
  • 5 p.m., West Shore Bank Buck Night
  • 7 p.m., Truck and Tractor Pull, grandstand, $10 per person, $14 per person in the pit
  • 10 p.m., musical fireworks, grandstand, free admission

Wednesday, Aug. 11, Kids’ Day

  • 9 a.m., beef show
  • Noon, midway opens
  • 3 p.m., rabbit show
  • 5 p.m., backpack and bike giveaway, Hayloft Entertainment Tent
  • 6 p.m., pedal pull, free for kids
  • 7 p.m. Western Michigan Old Engine Club Garden Tractor Pull, grandstand, free

Thursday, Aug. 12

  • 9 a.m., poultry show
  • Noon to 2 p.m., Special Kids Day (by invitation only through West Shore Educational Service District). 
  • 1 p.m., exhibit buildings open
  • 3 p.m., midway opens
  • 3 to 11 p.m., Read for Rides (kids who qualified through Mason County District Library).
  • 7 p.m., TNT Vehicle Barrel Racing, grandstand, $10 per person, $20 per person in pit. 

Friday, Aug. 13, Fantastic Friday

  • 10 a.m., dairy show
  • 10 a.m., horse fun games
  • Noon, exhibit buildings open
  • 3 p.m., midway opens
  • 7 p.m., SJO Super Cross, grandstand, $10 per person, $14 per person in pit

Saturday, Aug. 14, Fair Finale

  • 8:30 a.m., Stampede 5K Fun Run/Walk
  • 9 a.m., Barn Brawl Wrestling Tournament
  • 11 a.m., West Michigan Livestock Council Animal Auction
  • Noon, exhibit buildings open, midway opens
  • 3 p.m, Mason County Farm Bureau Hay Bale Toss Contest
  • 6:30 p.m., Unique Motor Sports Demolition Derby, grandstand, $15 per person, $20 per person in pit.

The Western Michigan Fair takes place at the Mason County Fairgrounds, located on US 10 between Pere Marquette Highway and Meyers Road.
