Clown Band to hold first local performance since 2019.

SCOTTVILLE — The Scottville Clown Band will be on its home stage Tuesday, June 29, for its first local public performance since August 2019. The band will perform its traditional Patriotic Concert at the Scottville Clown Band Shell, 105 W. Green St., beginning at 7 p.m.

The band did not perform any shows in 2020, ending its streak of performing 72 years in a row. The last time the band stopped performing was from 1942 through 1946, during and immediately after World War II. In 1947, the Scottville Clown Band was re-formed by Scottville merchant Ray Schulte. The band’s roots date back to the early 1900s.

“We are ready to kick off the upcoming Independence Day holiday with our traditional patriotic show,” said band President Jim Lindenau. “This show is slightly different than a typical Clown Band show. It is a little more serious, but a great tribute to our great country.”

The band started its 2021 season performing at the Kalkaska Trout Festival in April. Last week, it performed in front of over 2,000 people at Muskegon’s McGraft Park. The band has also played some private performances this year as well.

On Sunday, July 4, the Clown Band will take up its traditional spot ending the Ludington Area Jaycees Freedom Festival Grand Parade. With the exception of the World War II years mentioned above, the Clown Band has performed in the Ludington Fourth of July parade since the 1920s.

The parade begins at 1 p.m. this year. In years past it started at 2 p.m.

The Clown Band will perform again at the Scottville Clown Band Shell on Saturday, Sept. 11. A Celebrating Scottville event is planned for that day with several activities taking place.
