Youth Advisory Council awards over $4,000 to local teachers.

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) of the Community Foundation for Mason County recently awarded $4,232 in teacher mini-grants. Whether the funds are for a new idea or a little extra needed to make lesson plans great, YAC Teacher mini-grants are made available annually to help Mason County public and private school teachers in the classroom.

Recipients of grants included: 

  • Teresa Eriksen, Ludington Area School District, seventh grade, Foldscopes for Seventh Graders, $455.
  • Melanie Tomaski, LASD, high school, Creating a Framework for Success, $500.
  • Laura Holmes, LASD, third grade, Deepening Number Sense in Mathematics, $318.60.
  • Heather Zwick, LASD, preschool, Outdoor Classroom Items, $408.
  • Brooks Johnson, Mason County Central, K-12, Heart Rate Monitors, $300.
  • Carleen Shinn, LAS, kindergarten through second grade, Music on a Cart, $130.
  • Katie Tyndall, Covenant Christian School, preschool, Let it Shine, $390.02.
  • Tom Thomas, MCC, sixth through 12th grades, Music for Jazz, $500.
  • Becky Gerhart, MCC, 10th and 12th grades, Expanding Book Choices: Sports, Adventure/War, Suspense, and Self-Help, $496.40.
  • Heidi Urka, LASD, first grade, Signs of Success, $299.
  • Marissa Rodriguez, MCC, high school, New Books for High School Library, $435.

The Youth Advisory Council is comprised of 18 student representatives from Mason County schools and involves young people solving real problems affecting their communities and peers. YAC members help set policy and guide distribution of grants to promising, youth-related projects in Mason County.

“It was really incredible to see all of the amazing projects that our teachers have organized for their students,” said Jackson Kimes, YAC president.

The Community Foundation for Mason County is an affiliate of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County.
