SUMMIT TOWNSHIP — A fire severely damaged a mobile home at Heritage Hills Mobile Home Estates, 3677 S. Pere Marquette Highway, Friday morning. Riverton Township Fire Department and Pere Marquette Township Fire Department were initially dispatched to the scene at 8:40 a.m. Riverton Fire Chief Joe Cooper said nobody was home at the time of the fire, which he said may have started by a candle in a bedroom. “The female occupant said that she believed a candle was left burning in a bedroom,” Cooper said. “We won’t know for sure until we have the fire inspected.”

Fire damage was limited to the bedroom areas of the home but the rest of the house suffered smoke and water damage, Cooper said. The home was not insured. Its occupants, Aracely Valente and Margarito Sanchez said they lost all their clothing in the fire. The American Red Cross and Mason County Fire Relief Fund were requested to assist the couple. Family friend Rachel Olivarez said the couple will stay at her house. Anyone wishing to help them may call Olivarez at 231-425-0052.

Also responding to assist were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, and Ludington Fire Department.
