79th District Court sentencings and dismissals, posted Aug. 28, 2020.

LUDINGTON — The following were recently sentenced in Mason County’s 79th District Court:

-Richard Joseph Byrne, 58, of 12983 Noling Woods Dr., South Lyon, pleaded guilty Aug. 17 to illegally taking deer/bear and was sentenced to 90 days discretionary jail for one year; hunting privileges revoked through 2025, and $2,385 in fines/costs. A second count of illegally taking deer/bear was dismissed.

-Regan Rees, 56, of 3940 W. Kistler Rd., Riverton Township, pleaded guilty Aug. 25 to driving while license suspended (DWLS) and was sentenced to 93 days discretionary jail for one year and $285 in fines/costs. Conviction is reportable to Secretary of State (SOS).

-Juan Leonel Estrada, 50, of 1556 E. Mill Rd., Hart, pleaded guilty Aug. 25 to third degree retail fraud and was sentenced to pay $604.48 in fines/costs/restitution.

-Blake Allen Stankowski, 27, of 6417 N. Stiles Rd., Victory Township, pleaded guilty Aug. 25 to operating a vehicle while impaired by liquor (OWIL) and was sentenced to two days in jail with credit for two days served; 93 days discretionary jail for one year; must have a substance abuse evaluation; must attend victim’s impact panel; no drugs/alcohol; subject to random PBTs; and $895 in fines/costs. Conviction is reportable to SOS.

-James R. Shanklin, Jr., 57, of 5525 N. Custer Rd., Free Soil, pleaded guilty Aug. 25 to operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) and was sentenced to two days in jail with credit for two days served; 93 days discretionary jail for two years; must attend victim’s impact panel; must continue current substance abuse counseling; no drugs/alcohol; subject to random PBTs; and $1,250 in fines/costs. Conviction is reportable to SOS.

-Roger Dean Newton, 35, of 310 S. Main St., Apt. 6, Custer, pleaded guilty Aug. 4 to OWI and was sentenced to three days in jail with credit for three days served; 93 days discretionary jail for two years; must attend victim’s impact panel; no drugs/alcohol; subject to random PBTs; must obtain Soberlink for vehicle; must attend outpatient recovery management group counseling; and $1,075 in fines/costs. Conviction is reportable to SOS. A charge of operating with a blood alcohol level over .17 was dismissed.

-Dylan James Hansen, 26, of 9430 E. Filmore Rd., Hesperia, pleaded no contest Aug. 25 to DWLS and improper plates and was sentenced to 120 days in jail with credit for 120 days served and $175 in fines/costs. May perform ten hours of community service in lieu of fines/costs. Conviction is reportable to SOS.

-Neal Barton Guss, 28, of 4931 ½ N. Cleveland St., Fountain, pleaded guilty Aug. 27 to allowing a person to drive in violation of the motor vehicle code and was sentenced to pay $335 in fines/costs.

-Joshua James Hardy, 33, of 4964 S. Stiles Rd., Amber Township, pleaded guilty Aug. 25 to allowing a person to drive in violation of the motor vehicle code and was sentenced to 90 days discretionary jail for one year and $285 in fines/costs. Charges of failure to maintain security (no vehicle insurance) and driving while license suspended were dismissed.

Dismissals

-Maria Alcaria Estrada, 52, of 1556 E. Mill Rd., Hart, had a charge of third degree retail fraud dismissed on Aug. 26. According to court records, “Co-defendant took complete responsibility for the event.”

-Joseph Lee Oszust, 44, of 1520 Betty Ave., Pere Marquette Township, had a charge of failure to maintain security (no vehicle insurance) dismissed on Aug. 24.

-Katherine Ann Root, 37, of 408 N. Main St., Scottville, had a charge of failure to maintain security (no vehicle insurance) dismissed on Aug. 24.
