FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — A 46-year-old Orleans Township (Ionia County) man, driving a motorcycle, was seriously injured Saturday morning in a single vehicle crash on US 31. According to Mason County Sheriff Sgt. Adam Lamb on the scene, James Lee May was northbound on his 2017 Honda CRF250 on US 31, south of Koenig Road, when he was attempting to make a lane change and apparently lost control of the bike and fell to the ground. He was wearing a helmet but it fell off during the crash. The man was following his wife, who was on another motorcycle. He was transported by ambulance to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital. He was then flown to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids and is listed in critical condition, according to Sheriff Kim Cole.

A Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputy and Michigan State Police trooper were nearby when the crash occurred. The trooper was about 1/2 mile north of the scene responding to a non-related car/deer crash. Other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at 11:57 a.m. They included Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, Grant Township Fire Department, and Life EMS. The crash closed US 31 for about two hours.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office.
