Scottville resident involved in fatal Manistee County crash.

FILER TOWNSHIP, Manistee County — An 18-year-old Manistee woman, Sydney Jade Riggs, died this morning following a single vehicle crash on Merkey Road near Maple Road. According to Manistee County Sheriff Kenneth Falk, the crash occurred about 3:49 a.m. when a Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 20-year-old from Scottville (gender not specified in press release), was traveling westbound on Merkey Road, lost control and went off the side of the road. The vehicle then rolled over and struck a utility pole. The vehicle continued down an embankment until coming to a final rest.

Riggs, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to Falk. She was transported by ambulance to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, Falk said. It remains under investigation.

Emergency crews on scene included Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, Filer Township Fire Department, Manistee Police Department, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Tribal Police, Michigan State Police and North Flight EMS.
