Man rescued from Lake Michigan following hours long search.

GRANT TOWNSHIP — Multiple agencies were involved in a search that began early this morning for a suicidal male. Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Michigan State Police troopers, Grant Township Fire and Rescue and Life EMS were initially called to the end of West Nurnberg Road around 1 a.m. for a well being/suicidal subject call, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. 

Cole said a note had been left indicating the person wanted to end his life. A search began at that time and then resumed this morning.

At 6:39 a.m., Grant Township Fire Department was dispatched again to the same area for a missing person search. Free Soil/Meade Fire Department personnel were called to assist as well. 

Shortly after 8 a.m., U.S. Coast Guard Ludington Station personnel contacted Mason-Oceana 911 over the radio to inform dispatchers that they had been in contact with boaters who picked up a male subject in Lake Michigan. 

“A male subject from Indiana was found in Lake Michigan by fisherman off shore on a floating raft,” Cole said. “He had tied weights to a chain which he had wrapped and secured to his body.”

Coast Guard personnel requested EMS and Ludington Fire Department rescue personnel to respond to the Coast Guard station in Ludington. The fire department assisted with removing the chain.

The subject was then transported by Life EMS ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.
