Scottville police warn detour motorists to obey traffic laws.

SCOTTVILLE — The US 31 detour through Scottville began today as Michigan Department of Transportation crews begin resurfacing the bypass. Scottville Police Chief Matt Murphy is advising travelers to obey the speed limits in town.

“We aren’t issuing warnings,” Murphy said. “We are ticketing people who violate the city’s traffic laws.”
By 11 a.m. on Tuesday, just hours after the detour began, Murphy said he had issued seven speeding tickets, and expects to issue many more in the next couple of weeks.

The speed limit is 30 mph on Main Street and 30 mph on West State Street (US 10) until traffic is past the east entrance of MacPhail Field where it increases to 40 mph and then 55 mph beyond the bypass.

“Our top priority is to keep our residents and visitors safe, especially the children in our town. We ask that motorists obey the speed limit and keep their eyes on the road and off their phones,” Murphy said.

MDOT is working on a three phase resurfacing project between US 10 and Sugar Grove Road. The $2.4 million project consists of 3.74 miles of asphalt resurfacing, drainage improvements, and pavement markings.

Phase 1 consisted of preparations.

Phase 2 began today with the closure of the bypass between US 10 and Scottville Road/Main Street. It is expected to last until mid-July with traffic detoured on Main Street and State Street (US 10) through Scottville. Those who remember the days before the bypass was built in the mid-90s know that US 31 used to be routed on North Main Street.

Phase 3 will close US 31 between US 10 and Sugar Grove with traffic detoured west on Sugar Grove to Stiles Road then south to US 10/31.
