GRANT TOWNSHIP — A 32-year-old Grand Rapids man was arrested by Mason County sheriff’s deputies after attempting to pass a counterfeit bill at the Forest Trail Service Center on US 31, and then returning to the same store the next day with a woman who had injuries on her face that are consistent with an assault, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

The man attempted to pass a $10 counterfeit bill Monday, June 1, shortly before 10 p.m. He left the scene before deputies arrived, Sheriff Cole said.

“On Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at 4:02 p.m., the same subject returned to the store. During the second encounter, the subject did not attempt to pass any counterfeit money. However, he was recognized as the same person from the day before. In addition, during the call related to yesterday’s event, it was reported a female with the male had injuries to her face consistent with an assault,” Cole said.

“As deputies arrived on scene, the two ran into the woods behind the store but were captured within a few minutes. During the arrest of the male, the female reported to deputies that she had been taken against her will from the Grand Rapids area. This portion of the investigation is still ongoing at this time.

“The male subject was found to have on him the same fake $10 bill he had attempted to pass the previous day — it had been marked by store employees — along with an additional $400 of alleged counterfeit money of various denominations.”

The suspect remains lodged in the Mason County Jail on charges of domestic violence, interfering with a telecommunication device and uttering counterfeit money. The female victim was treated at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
