PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — Fire destroyed a house and displaced seven adults and two children Sunday morning. Pere Marquette Township Fire Department was initially called to the Geraldo Lopez residence, 6728 W. Bryant Road, at 9:44 a.m. for a report of an unattended burning barrel. Two minutes later, dispatch information was updated to state the home was on fire. Mason County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Adam Lamb was the first emergency unit on scene. Lamb said he had travelled past that location just a few minutes earlier and did not notice any fire. When dispatched, Lamb was north on M-116 near Lincoln Lake. He turned around and upon arriving discovered the house was fully engulfed in flames.
Pere Marquette Township Fire Chief Larry Gaylord said the residents, seven adults, one infant, and one 2-year-old, were home when the fire started. No one was injured.
Ludington Fire Department and Hamlin Township Fire Department were dispatched to assist. Other units on scene were Ludington Police Department and Michigan State Police. American Red Cross was called to assist firefighters and the victims. Consumers Energy and DTE were also on scene.
