LUDINGTON — A 39-year-old homeless woman from Mason County led police on a high-speed chase with a stolen vehicle Tuesday afternoon, April 21, that started in Mason County and ended in Lake County after “stop sticks” were deployed.

The woman is lodged in the Mason County Jail on felony charges of car theft, fleeing and eluding police and resisting and opposing police.

Mason County sheriff’s deputies received a report of a stolen vehicle in the City of Ludington shortly after 3:30 p.m., said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. A deputy on patrol spotted a vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle on US 10 near Brye Road.

“When the deputy was able to get behind the vehicle and verify the registration as that of the one reported stolen, he and the Scottville Police Department attempted a traffic stop on US 10 at Tuttle Road,” Cole said.

“The vehicle failed to pull over and led deputies on a pursuit through Custer and Branch townships in Mason County,” the sheriff said. “The vehicle fled into Lake County, and at US 10 and Jenks Road, Lake County deputies and DNR law enforcement deployed ‘stop sticks” in an effort to disable the tires on the fleeing vehicle. The ‘stop sticks’ were effective in stopping the vehicle.”

During the arrest, the woman fought with several officers before being taken into custody, according to Cole.

The vehicle was stolen from the 600 block of South Washington Avenue, according to the Ludington Police Department.

The suspect’s name is not being released pending arraignment.

The sheriff’s office was assisted during the chase by the Scottville Police Department, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, DNR — Law Enforcement, and the Michigan State Police.
