Fire destroys Custer garage.

CUSTER — Fire destroyed a garage at 457 S. Maple Ave. in the village tonight. Custer Fire Department and Scottville Fire Department personnel were initially dispatched to the fire at 11:27 p.m. Branch Fire Department was also called to assist. Upon arrival the first fire unit reported the garage, located only a few feet away from a house, was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the house. The home occupants were home at the time of the fire and remained in the home.

Within 30 minutes firefighters had the majority of the fire knocked down. The building was a total loss.

According to Custer Fire Chief Darrell Crawford, the fire appeared to have started from a burning barrel that was right behind the garage which caught tires on fire stacked against the back wall of the building.
