LUDINGTON — Ludington Area School District’s OJ DeJonge Middle School students competed in the annual Beat the Blahs the last week of February. Students and staff partook in many different daily activities and themes, where each grade level worked as a team to raise the most money during that week. The winning class got the opportunity to choose a charity of their choice.

“The seventh grade class won this year,” Principal Mike Hart said. “Over $3,400 was raised by the entire school and the seventh grade students will be picking their charity to donate to this week.”

Funds were raised through penny wars, silent auction items, fiscal donations and raffle. Staff, parents and businesses all donated different items for the silent auction and raffles and each grade level participated in the penny wars.

“We do this event each year as a way to break up the winter ‘blahs,’” Hart said. “It has been a tradition at the middle school for a long time and the kids and staff really get behind the event and the idea of being able to donate back to the community.”
