LUDINGTON – A 41-year-old Muskegon man was sentenced to concurrent prison terms of two to eight years for felonious assault and one and a half to four years for assaulting/resisting/obstructing police Tuesday, Oct. 1, in 51st Circuit Court.

Michael Lawrence Wright, of 1103 Englewood Ave., was on parole for third-degree criminal sexual conduct (CSC) at the time of committing the offenses July 28, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola. Therefore, he received no jail credit for his 64 days served in jail. He was sentenced as a third-offense habitual offender.

Wright was sentenced in Muskegon County to 6-30 years in prison for the third-degree CSC – victim age 13-15, May 19, 1999, according to the Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS).

Wright has served previous prison terms for Muskegon County convictions of breaking and entering a vehicle in 1996, failure to register as a sex offender in 2010, assaulting/resisting/obstructing police in 2010 and gross indecency between males in 2011, according to OTIS.

Sentencing guidelines in the case are 7-34 months for the assaulting/resisting/obstructing conviction and 14-43 months for the felonious assault conviction.

“His wife is still supporting him and is behind him,” said Wright’s attorney, Al Swanson, Jr..

“He’s facing the consequences for his actions,” Swanson said.

“I need treatment for alcohol,” Wright said to Judge Susan K. Sniegowski as he cried.

The victim in the felonious assault case is Wright’s 20-year-old step son, Spaniola said. A knife with a 3-inch blade was used.

Wright’s sentence will run consecutively to his parol term, Sniegowski said.
