LUDINGTON – A 50-year-old homeless man and a 32-year-old homeless woman were arrested by Ludington police Tuesday, Aug. 13, shortly after 10:30 p.m. for disorderly conduct/prowling after a police officer found them staying in an abandoned building on Lake Street in the vicinity of the Carrom factory, said Ludington Police Chief Mark Barnett.
There are more instances of homeless people illegally camping on property in the city and outside the city limits during the summer months, said Barnett. With the homeless shelter closed in the summer and the nice weather this time of year, homelessness activity increases, he said.
Other problems often occur in these types of situations, the chief said, such as alcohol consumption and drug use. In this particular case, both suspects were highly intoxicated, he said. They were allegedly hiding from a police officer under a trailer near the factory loading docks after he made initial contact with them.
