AMBER TOWNSHIP – Richard Swiger of Scottville has been identified as the 81-year-old man who died Thursday, Aug. 1, while riding an adult tricycle on US 10/31. According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, about 1:40 p.m. Swiger was riding his bike westbound on the paved shoulder of US 10/31 just west of Dennis Road when he attempted to drive over the curb cut to the parking lot of the Watson Ludington car dealership. When doing so, he tipped the bike over and fell under the trailer tires of a passing westbound semi-truck driven by Jeffrey Harwood, 51 of Lowell. Hardwood was slowing his truck down and preparing to turn into the driveway of Urka Auto Center. The truck is owned by Vesco Oil Corp. of Grand Rapids.

Swiger was declared deceased on the scene.

Responding emergency personnel included Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Scottville Fire Department, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, and Life EMS. Ludington FIre Department’s rescue unit was dispatched but disregarded.
