HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — Emergency personnel have continued the search this morning in Lake Michigan for Daniel McCarthy, 18, of Lake County. McCarthy went missing Monday, July 22, while swimming near the mouth of the Big Sable River at Ludington State Park, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“Crews are currently conducting searches by land along the shores of the Ludington State Park,” Cole said. The sheriff’s office has launched its drone while Michigan State Police, MCSO marine patrol and Ludington Police Department’s harbor boat are conducting water searches.

Emergency crews worked search patterns in Lake Michigan until shortly after midnight early this morning with no results.

At 2:52 p.m., emergency personnel were notified of several persons who had been swept out into Lake Michigan at the Big Sable River outlet in Ludington State Park, Cole said.

“Ludington State Park Rangers along with deputies with the Mason County Sheriff’s Office immediately responded to the scene.  Support units with the United States Coast Guard, Hamlin Township Fire Department, Life EMS, Ludington Police Department, and United States Coast Guard Air Support also responded to the call.  It was determined that a total of eight persons were initially swept out into Lake Michigan, however, only seven could be accounted for.”

Cole said deputies were able to identify a female who had accompanied the male into the water and confirm he had last been seen in the water, struggling to stay afloat approximately 150 yards off shore.
