LUDINGTON – A 39-year-old Baldwin woman was sentenced to serve 90 days up front of a one-year discretionary jail term Tuesday, June 4, in 51st Circuit Court for “under ringing” merchandise in the self check-out lane at Walmart last March.

Leronda Marie Garcia-Manley, of 6852 Ester Ave., pleaded guilty to felony first-degree retail fraud in April.

“I took a cheaper item and kept ringing it up for the more expensive items at the self check-out,” Garcia-Manely testified last April. The difference in price was more than $1,000, she told Judge Susan K. Sniegowski.

Garcia-Manley has no prior criminal history, said her attorney Al Swanson, Jr.

She was caught on the third occasion of “under ringing” at the Walmart store in Pere Marquette Township, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola.

“That demonstrates a repeated course of conduct,” said Judge Sniegowski. Many of the stolen items were recovered, she said.

Garcia-Manley was also sentenced to one year probation and must pay $383.04 in restitution.

Sentencing guidelines in the case are 0-6 months.
