AMBER TOWNSHIP — During its regular meeting Monday, the West Shore Educational Service District (ESD) hired Amy Taranko as assistant superintendent of instruction. Taranko, a resident of Pere Marquette Township, is currently the principal of Hart Public School’s Spitler Elementary School.

In her 26th year of education, Taranko earned a teaching degree from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in school principalship from Central Michigan University. She taught at Hart Middle School from 1993-2009. In the 2009-10 school year, she was the principal at Hart Upper Elementary. This school year is her ninth year as Spitler’s principal.

ESD Superintendent Jason Jeffrey said Taranko competed against many qualified candidates but was the search committee’s top choice. “I am very excited to have Amy come on board with us. She brings a vast amount of experience that will be invaluable to the nine school districts the ESD serves. Amy is a local person who understands the needs of our districts.”

The assistant superintendent of instruction will oversee the ESD’s instructional services, school improvement programs and staff development, Jeffrey said.

Jeffrey said the ESD board is expected to hire its other vacant position, the assistant superintendent of special education, at its next regular meeting in July.
