MCC forensics team seeks donations for state tournament.

SCOTTVILLE — The Mason County Central High School forensics team is on its way to the state championships, hoping to take the title two years in a row. Coach Tom Richert would then like to take the team to the prestigious Mackinac Tournament, a sort of “pro bowl” held on Mackinac Island, but the team needs additional funds to make the trip possible.

In 2018, the team, was state champions, competing against schools of all sizes across the state.  Richert said he is hoping the team repeats its state victory this year. Last weekend, the team won first place in regionals.

“In order to compete in the Mackinac Tournament, the Pro Bowl of Forensics if you will, which takes place immediately after state finals, the team needs to raise $3,700 by the tournaments’ opening day of May 17.

Each team member has already contributed a $100 entry fee, but must come up with an additional $245 per student in order to be allowed to compete. Many Michigan private schools and the larger public schools fund this trip out of their budget. MCC doesn’t have the resources, Richert said.

“The students on the Forensics team benefit greatly from these competitions,” Richert said. “The individual and team awards lead to scholarships in fields such as sales, drama, public relations and the arts. We want to give our kids every opportunity to succeed, not just while at MCC, but in life.”

Fundraising was also hampered when the team’s bus crashed during a snow storm earlier in the season. Richert was badly injured and bedridden for weeks.

“We had ‘RoboTom’”, said sophomore Ryland Gigante. “Mr. Richert coached us via video chat every day after school from his bed while he was recovering. He is 100 percent dedicated to making MCC and his team the best in the state.”

Richert said any financial contribution is greatly appreciated.

Donations can be sent to the Mason County Central Forensics Team, 300 W. Broadway, Scottville, MI 49454.
