LUDINGTON – A 46-year-old Amber Township man was sentenced to serve 45 days up front of a one-year discretionary jail term for a conviction of seduction in 51st Circuit Tuesday, April 23.

Vincent Louis Grassa, of 1817 W. Conrad Rd., was initially facing a high-court misdemeanor of fourth-degree CSC and a second-offense habitual offender designation. Seduction, which is also a high-court misdemeanor, carries a five-year maximum penalty.

Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola read a letter in court written by the victim who stated that she has been “very emotionally drained and paranoid” since the incident occurred. “There is an underlying fear,” she wrote. The young woman purchased mace, which she keeps on her “at all times now.”

The incident happened at Kilwins store in Ludington where she was working.

“Mr. Grassa is 46 years of age, and for the better part of it, he has been an out-of-control alcoholic,” Spaniola said. “Instead of putting the citizenry at risk with drinking and driving, he put a young college student at risk.”

“He has taken this incident extremely seriously,” said his attorney Kathy Springstead. “He completed a 90-day program and continues to maintain his sobriety.”

“Mr. Grassa, I really hope this treatment that you went through is helpful,” said Judge Susan K. Sniegowski. “Alcohol has caused you a lot of problems in your life. It brings out the worst in you. You were in a black-out drunk that day.”

Grassa was also sentenced to two years probation and may be placed on remote alcohol monitoring if his probation agent orders it.

Grassa offered to pay the victim $500 for restitution instead of the $300 that she was seeking. He received credit for 38 days served in jail.

Sentencing guidelines in the case are 0-9 months.
