Open house to celebrate new Custer Twp. office.

CUSTER TOWNSHIP — Custer Township will hold an open house celebrating the opening of its new township office on Saturday, April 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. The township office is located at 1950 E. US 10, about half mile west of the Custer village limits.

For several years the township has been renting space from the Village of Custer at its municipal building, 3673 E. US 10. The building also houses the Custer Fire Department and Mason County Rural Fire Authority.

Township Clerk Ann Larr said township records have been kept at board members’ homes as well as equipment necessary to keep track of the township records, such as computers and printers.

“With the state implementing new election equipment, the lack of storage really became an issue for the township,” Larr said.

During the township’s December 2017 meeting, the board took action to look into the building at 1950 E. US 10. The board entered into a purchase agreement to buy the building for $90,000 on an installment purchase agreement, with financing from West Shore Bank. The building remodel was estimated to cost about $115,000 with a total project cost of about $205,000.

“Due to the projected changes in budgetary commitments, the township was able to do this project without any new taxes being levied,” Larr said.

Larr credited the bank, plus Carpenter’s Sons contracting, attorney Tracy Thompson, and architect Kendra Thompson for guidance in the project.
