Obituary: Donald Arthur Verduin, 71, Ludington.

Donald Arthur Verduin, 71, died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 7, 2019, following a mercifully short illness.

Don was the second of three sons born in Grand Rapids to Arthur and Clarissa (Hofmeyer) Verduin. He graduated from Ottawa Hills High School and Central Michigan University, from which he also held a master’s degree in education. On June 28, 1972 he married Sharon Westmaas at LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church. Together, they raised their three children in Grand Rapids.

Don was a passionate explorer of the natural world. He taught science at Ottawa Hills High School and City High-Middle School. He and Shari retired to Ludington in 2009. He was active in his church home, Emanuel Lutheran, where he sang in the choir and taught confirmation.
Don had an irrepressible love of life, enjoying camping, hunting, fishing, and road trips through the American countryside. Above all, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his son Tim (Talia Zaider) Verduin of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, daughter Betsy Reed of Ludington, and son Ben (Emily) Verduin of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Zoe, Elijah, and Levi Verduin, Julia and Ethan Reed, Alex and Henry Verduin; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and his brothers, David (Sharon) and Doug (Sandra) Verduin.
A memorial service for Don will be held at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Ludington on Wednesday, February 13 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Domingo Shriver officiating. Visitation will be held at Emanuel on Wednesday, February 13 from 10 to 11 a.m.
