Obituary: Loyde E. Durham, 82, of Ludington

Loyde E. Durham, 82, of Ludington passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2018. He was born May 7, 1936 in Scottville to AI and Pearl (Buffenbarger) Durham.  Loyde was in the last class in the old Scottville High School, the class of 1954. Loyde enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country for 16 years. He worked in the Army Security Agency and spent time in Ethiopia, two tours in Korea, one in Vietnam, and one in Germany.  He received a bronze star and accommodations.

Loyde taught automotive repair at West Shore Community College. He also ran the machine shop at NAPA Auto for 22 years.  He was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and he and Cathy had traveled all over the US with them. After some genealogy research, Loyde discovered he had some strong roots in the Native American Ancestry. He began attending Pow Wows and built many drums and pipes.  Lyode was a kind a generous many who would help anyone who needed it. If there wasn’t a tool to fix it, he made it!

Loyde will be greatly missed by his children, Christopher Durham of Ludington, Timothy (Cheryl) Durham of Ludington, Jacqueline (Daniel) Laliberte of Scottville, and Patrick (Jeri) Durham of Muskegon; his 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his sisters, Alma (Fred) Rhinebolt and Patricia Fisk, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Loyde was preceded in death by his wife Catherine; brother, Everett (Sandy) Durham; sister, Iola Loss; and nephew, Bruce Durham.

A celebration of life service for both Loyde and Catherine will be held Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Ludington. Family will greet friends starting at 10 a.m.

Memorial contributions for Loyde and Catherine may be directed to the American Legion in Ludington.
