Obituary: Betty Jane Lunde, 96, of Ludington

Betty Jane Lunde, 96, of Ludington passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2018. She was born July 22, 1922 in Scottville to Harley and Anna (Andersen) Sprague.  She graduated from Ludington High School in 1940.

On March 20, 1942 she married Theodore W. Lunde and they celebrated 51 years together before he passed away in 1993. In the 1940s Betty moved to Chicago and worked at a law firm while Theodore was in the service and then returned to Ludington to live and raise their family in 1948. She did bookkeeping at Dow Credit Union, Stokley’s and Smith and Eddy Insurance before building the Sandpiper Gift Shop which they owned and operated for 17 years.  She also had her own ceramic studio and taught many needlework classes.

Betty was an accomplished artist. While wintering in Florida, Betty took up quilting and made many quilts for her children and other family members along with many water color pictures for them to enjoy.

Betty had many hobbies, including bridge and other card games. She also enjoyed reading, and visiting family and friends. She also loved to travel and had traveled to all 50 states, some in their motorhome. They also enjoyed many trips to Europe, two of them with Theodore’s US Army 94th Division troop during World War II.

Betty was a life member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and church circle, Lincoln Hills Golf Club, Art League, past president of the Memorial Medical Volunteer women’s Auxiliary, and Women’s Literary Club.

Betty is survived by her children, Linda (Jerry) Carlson of New Port Richey, Fla. and Jeffrey (Ruth) Lunde of Ludington; her grandchildren, Jodi Roberts, Scott Schoenherr, Brett Schoenherr, Eric (Carol) Lunde, Kyle Lunde, Matthew (Kim) Lunde; her great-grandchildren Cayla, Jacob, Justin, Wesley, Taylor, Linsey, Emmey, Tyler, Russell, Emery, Adrian, and Anastasia; her two great-great-grandchildren, Elsey and Theodore.

Besides her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her husband, her son, Richard William Lunde in 1963; a brother, Byron Sprague; her sisters, Dorothy (Stuart) Barclay and Mildred Jabrocki

A funeral will be held Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Ludington United Methodist Church. Family will greet friends starting at 10 a.m. also at the church.

Memorial contributions in Betty’s name may be directed to the church.
