Custer Road Bridge construction begins Monday; closure in a few weeks.
CUSTER TOWNSHIP — Custer Road Bridge over the Pere Marquette River, south of the Village of Custer, will be under construction starting Monday, March 12.
Closure of the bridge will occur within a few weeks when seasonal weight restrictions are lifted on state and county roads. Shoulder/lane closures may occur as the contractor begins time sensitive operations in and around the bridge.
Construction will include removal of the existing 165-feet long by 24-feet wide three-span steel I-beam bridge deck, that was constructed in 1953, and replaced with a 33-feet wide (30-feet clear width) deck using galvanized steel I-beams and a 9-inch concrete deck with two-tube railing.
The $852,000 project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration, Michigan Department of Transportation and the Mason County Road Commission.
The detour will include Custer Road, US-10, Scottville and Chauvez roads. Traffic will be detoured by the contractor, Milbocker and Sons, Inc. of Allegan.
The project is anticipated to be completed by Saturday, June 30.
