CUSTER — Mason County Eastern School District personnel took a threat by a high school student last week seriously and contacted the Mason County Sheriff’s Office to investigate. In a letter dated Feb. 26, Superintendent Paul Shoup addressed parents and community members:
“It has come to my attention that one of our high school students made a threat to do bodily harm to another high school student, following a tip we received Thursday night. The threat was a text message that stated he was going to ‘beat up’ this student.

“The administration followed school protocol and, due to recent events, we took the proper precautions and immediately contacted the Mason County Sheriff’s (Office) who did a thorough investigation.

“We were confident that through our protocols and working closely with the sheriff’s department that all students were safe to come to school today. The Mason County Eastern School District takes these matters very seriously, especially those involving the health, safety and welfare of our students and staff. This matter has been thoroughly investigated by the school and Mason County Sheriff’s (Office) and the student involved has been held accountable according to district code of conduct and will be separated from school for an extended period of time.

“As a district, we must always work to maintain a healthy culture absent of violence that allows our students to learn in an atmosphere where they feel safe. While it is unfortunate that instances such as this arise, it is important that we address them swiftly and appropriately and continue to support the great learning environment we enjoy here in MCE.

“The Mason County Eastern School District stands steadfast in its mission statement in creating a ‘School that believes that all students can learn and reach their full potential in an environment of teamwork, trust, and pride.’ Thank you for your continued support of Mason County Eastern Schools.”
