HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — A fire at a hopper on the Sargent Sand Mining Co. property, 7690 M-116, resulted in six fire departments being dispatched Tuesday night. About 7:30 p.m. Hamlin Township Fire Department and Pere Marquette Township Fire Department were called to the scene where Mason-Oceana 911 dispatch reported that the hopper and a building were on fire and all personnel working at the sand mining facility had been evacuated.

Hamlin Township Fire Chief Steve Vandervest initially called for Ludington Fire Department to set up a water filling site at a fire hydrant at Lakeshore Drive (M-116) and Bryant Road. Upon arriving on the scene he called for a full department response from LFD and water tanker trucks from Scottville Fire Department, Riverton Township Fire Department, and Custer Fire Department. As Scottville Fire Department’s tanker arrived, Vandervest cancelled Riverton and Custer.

Personnel from Mason County Sheriff’s Office and Life EMS also responded. More information will be reported on this post as it comes available.

Deputies have asked that motorists avoid, or at least use caution, on M-116 between Bryant Road and the Ludington State Park.

All units cleared the scene at 9:30 p.m.
