HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — Two Ludington area teen-aged boys were responsible for setting a fire on Ludington State Park property that burned up to 4 acres Monday afternoon, according to Hamlin Township Fire Chief Steve Vandervest. The fire occurred on the west side of Piney Ridge Road between M 116 and Larch Road.

Hamlin Fire Department was initially called to the scene and requested assistance from Ludington Fire Department. Vandervest said shifting winds caused the fire to spread quickly. He said the teens, who called in the fire, admitted to lighting two fires along the road. He said he wasn’t clear why they lit the fires. Jim Gallie, manager of the Ludington State Park said that he was calling in fire investigating personnel from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire in about 45 minutes.

Mason County Sheriff’s Office personnel assisted with traffic control at the scene.
