Ludington couple escapes injuries following I-94 crash with semi.

CALHOUN COUNTY — A Ludington couple was involved in a crash involving a semi-truck and trailer on I-94 Saturday, Sept. 23. According to the Battle Creek Inquirer, a car driven by Cletus Kyle, 74, of Ludington, was rear-ended by a semi-truck driven by Charles Rothney, 63, of Durant on I-94 west of Battle Creek.

The report stated that Rothney, who was westbound on I-94 near mile marker 93 (near Renton Road), said he looked away from the road to put down his eyeglasses. Michigan State Police troopers said Rothney was unable to slow for congested traffic and struck the rear of Cletus Kyle’s vehicle; Kyle was with his wife, Ruthann. The impact forced the car into the median and the semi continued through the median and through cable barriers into the eastbound lanes where it crashed into a car driven by a Linda Engle, 51, of Bellevue. The truck stopped against the guardrail on the south side of the eastbound lanes and then both vehicles caught fire.

The report stated that a fourth vehicle hit the cable barriers to avoid the crash.

The Kyles were treated at the scene  by EMS personnel while the truck driver was transported by ambulance to a hospital and later released. Traffic was stopped and then slowed for several hours.
