Stephens Road Bridge to close for construction to Aug. 14.

FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — Stephens Road Bridge over the Big Sable River, northeast of the Village of Free Soil, will be under construction starting Monday, August 14.

Construction will include removal of the existing 28-feet long by 19-feet wide single-span steel I-beam bridge that was reconstructed in 1987.  The new bridge will be an 80-feet long by 30-feet wide single-span prestressed precast concrete box beam bridge with a concrete deck and two-tube railing.

The $746,000 project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration, Michigan Department of Transportation and the Mason County Road Commission.

Traffic will be detoured by the contractor, J.E. Kloote Contracting, Inc. of Ferrysburg.  The detour will include Treml, Custer, and Free Soil roads.

The project is anticipated to be open to traffic by Friday, October 27 and completed in its entirety by Thursday, November 30.
