LUDINGTON — The driver arrested following a roadside drive-off Monday, July 3, on the Mason-Manistee counties had nine previous operating a vehicle while intoxicated charges prior to his 10th arrest Monday. Joseph Edward Booker, 52, of Fenton, was arrested by Mason County sheriff’s deputies Monday afternoon after Mason-Oceana 911 received a report of a vehicle crash at the intersection of Custer and Countyline roads on the border of Mason County’s Free Soil Township and Manistee County’s Stronach Township. Upon arrival at the scene, emergency personnel determined that the incident was not a crash but actually a driver who had just driven off the roadway.

In addition to Booker’s 10th OWI offense — a felony — he is also facing felony charges of driving while license suspended, third offense. A roadside alcohol breathalyzer test revealed an alcohol level of .28%, according to Sheriff Kim Cole.

Booker was arraigned in Mason County’s 79th District Court and remains lodged in the Mason County Jail on a $15,000 cash/surety bond.

Responding to the scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, Grant Township Fire Department, and Life EMS ambulance.
