LUDINGTON — A 22-year-old Ludington man convicted of heroin possession received a stern warning from 51st Circuit Court Judge Susan K. Sniegowski during his sentencing Monday, June 12 at the Mason County Courthouse.

“The number of young people we see overdosing on heroin is just astounding,” Sniegowski said to Robert Harold Routley, of 1030 N. William St. “If you keep using heroin, you’re going to die.”

The judge also warned Routley that, with his extensive criminal record involving drug use, he will be sent to prison if he returns to her courtroom.

“If you come back, you will go the department of corrections. I hope you take advantage of the controlled substance programs and services that are available.”

Routley was arrested last March by the State, Sheriff, and City Enforcement of Narcotic Team (SSCENT) for his most recent offense.

It is his third drug offense in the last few years, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola, and Routley was on probation at the time of the cime.

“Mr Routley’s performance while on probation has been less than stellar,” Spaniola said.

Sniegowski sentenced Routley to serve six months up front on a one-year discretionary jail term with credit for 74 days served.

“The ball is in his court to adequately address his controlled substance issues,” Spaniola said. “If he doesn’t, there will be more serious consequences to come.”

Routley was also sentenced to two years probation.

Sentencing guidelines in the case are 0-18 months.
