Several departments battle Riverton woods fire.

RIVERTON TOWNSHIP — A woods fire caused by a small brush fire burned several acres Saturday afternoon. The fire started in an orchard in the 3400 block of West Deren Road, between Morton and Lister roads. The small brush fire was located on the southwest corner of woods and lost control in winds that were south-southwest at 17 mph.

riverton_fire_brush_fire_deren_04-08-17Riverton Township Fire Department was initially called to the fire about 1:30 p.m., followed by Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Hamlin Fire Department, and firefighting units from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources out of Baldwin. The fire quickly spread north through the woods. Also on scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office and DNR law enforcement.

Riverton Fire Chief Joe Cooper declared the fire contained about 2:25 p.m.
