EAST LANSING — The story of the 2016-2017 Ludington Orioles boys varsity basketball team isn’t so much about a basketball game as it about citizenship, sportsmanship, and unity. While the Orioles lost to the New Haven Rockets Saturday 45-36 in the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s class B boys state finals Saturday, the LHS basketball team members are No 1 to this community.

These boys are winners not only for having a 25-3 season and for being exemplary players who kept up with the New Haven team through most of the game, but they are winners because of their actions as well.

lhs_championship_2The story of this year’s Orioles boys basketball team is a story about the type of community we live in. As we covered Saturday’s game we looked around and we saw Orioles, but we also saw Cardinals and Spartans, all cheering on LHS. Over the past few days, all of Mason County came together and were Orioles.

This is a team whose members wore their faith on their sleeves, praying together on the court before their games and praising God after scoring the winning 3 point basket in the semi-final game Friday night. They were humbled winners and graceful losers.

These boys are a perfect example of the Bible verse from Galatians 6:7: “A man reaps what he sows.” We should be proud that these are the types of adults we raise in this community.

On another note, as the MCP team talked to staff of the Breslin Center Saturday, what we heard was how the Ludington Orioles fans were the most polite fans they had encountered during the tournaments. Again, something to be proud of, Mason County, you reap what you sow.
