PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP – Those seeking a different way to experience winter beauty in Mason County should consider the 1.7 mile snowshoe trail newly designated at the Mason County Picnic Area, 6501 W. Chauvez Rd.
The Mason County Parks and Recreation Committee created the trail at the park site adjacent to the Ludington Pumped Storage Plant. The project was completed with support from Consumers Energy, which with DTE jointly owns the park that is operated by Mason County.

The trail is designed to be traveled clockwise and is marked with white on green signs. It begins in woods, traversing small hills along a pathway used in the summer by walkers and by disc golfers on popular Mason County Disc Golf Organization courses.
After about a mile in woodlands, the trail joins the park road and showshoers return along the unplowed road to the Chauvez Road entrance.
“I think it’s another outdoor activity we can offer, and we’re more than happy to invite people to come out and use the trail,” said Ed McCumber, chair of the Mason County Parks Commission.
“Consumers Energy is pleased to support recreational opportunities at our hydroelectric generating sites across Michigan, and we are excited to coordinate with Mason County on this project to increase options for local and visiting outdoor enthusiasts seeking winter activities,” said William Schoenlein, Consumers Energy’s manager of hydro and renewable generation.
