SCOTTVILLE — Five years ago this month Mason County Press was launched to provide this area with a free, online alternative to local news. Over the years, we have continually strived to improve the service we offer to you. Today we take another major step forward by officially launching the MCP App. The app is free and is available on all major phone and tablet platforms.

We wanted to keep the app’s design simple. One of its primary functions is the ability to send out news alerts, also known as push notifications. The intention is to be conservative about the frequency of alerts we send out, most alerts will be about a breaking news story, a significant weather alert, or a cancellation or closing (particularly with schools). Like any app, subscribers always have the option to shut off push notifications or to turn off the alert sound. It’s also unlikely that we’ll be sending out push notifications in the middle of the night. However, all notices will still appear on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

The front page of the app will feature MCP’s current top stories. It will also feature top stories from our companion sites, Oceana County Press and Manistee County Press. By clicking on the headline, you will be taken to the respective website.

The app also features a “More News” tab which allows you to select one of our three websites.

One of the items that we are pretty excited about is the Community Calendar tab. Our goal is to make this the most comprehensive and most easily accessible community calendar in the three county area. If you have events to share, please email them to editor@masoncountypress.com.

The Media tab area will feature our videos that so many of our readers love to watch. It will also allow us to post podcasts. We have some ideas about that topic which we think you will really enjoy (more on that in the near future).

Naturally, as we are a free service to our readers, we rely on the support of our many great advertisers. Last year, MCP alone had over 2 million page views, which we think is a pretty good return on the investment for advertisers. If your business would like to be one of the advertisers on our app, please contact our sales team. The number of ads we are allowing is limited.
