SHERMAN TOWNSHIP — A 37-year-old man was injured Sunday afternoon in a traffic accident in the 4900 block of North Darr Road. Fountain Area Fire Chief Roger Berndt said the man told emergency personnel that he was attempting to move the tractor and didn’t sit down. “He put the clutch in and then slipped the gear, causing him to fall off the tractor,” Berndt said. The tractor then ran the man over, causing severe back and leg injuries.

Berndt said he was not sure if the man was by himself at the time of the accident. He said it appeared he was putting up barbed wire fencing.

The area of North Darr Road where the accident took place was a section of road inaccessible to regular street traffic due to a washed out bridge. Emergency vehicles had to enter the scene through a farm field.

The man was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. Berndt said the man was conscious and alert on the scene. He added that Aeromed helicopter was being called to the hospital, but Berndt could not confirm that the man was being transported to another hospital.

Responding to the scene were Michigan State Police, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Fountain Area Fire Department, and Life EMS.
