RIVERTON TOWNSHIP — Matthew Jon Broersma, 39, of Custer, is currently in serious condition at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. Broersma was involved in a single vehicle crash on Chauvez Road between Hoganson and Schwass roads Sunday morning. Initially, it was reported that Broersma was 37-years-old.
The crash occurred sometime in the early morning but it was not discovered until 7:19 a.m., just prior to sunrise, by a passerby. He was traveling east on Chauvez Road when the 1996 Ford Taurus station wagon he was driving apparently left the roadway as it entered the curves just before Swan Creek, striking several trees about 30 feet from the road.
Early morning temperatures hovered around freezing and emergency responders arriving on scene discovered the vehicle frosted over, indicating that the crash had occurred several hours prior. Broersma was trapped in the vehicle and rescue units from Custer and Ludington fire departments were called to extricate him. Riverton Township Fire Chief Joe Cooper said EMS had inquired about calling Aeromed helicopter from Grand Rapids but the service was unable to fly due to heavy fog. Broersma was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital and then transferred to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon.
Responding to the scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Riverton Township Fire Department, Custer Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, and Life EMS.
The crash remains under investigation.
