LUDINGTON — A 37-year-old homeless man was sentenced to serve four months up front of a one-year discretionary jail term for a felony conviction of larceny in a building Tuesday, July 19, in 51st Circuit Court for stealing video games from a Ludington apartment.

David Robert Southern was also ordered by Judge Susan K. Sniegowski to serve three years probation. His sentence runs concurrently to a Manistee County drug case. Southern received credit for 89 days served in jail.

According to his court file, Southern stole video games from an apartment in the City of Ludington.

Southern’s criminal record also includes 14 misdemeanor convictions and a “problematic juvenile record,” said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola. “He has been homeless in the recent past,” Spaniola said, citing substance abuse issues and mental and physical health problems. “Mr. Southern is struggling in the community behaviorally due to substance abuse issues,” he said.
