Butterfield was murdered at the site, just north of Townline Road, on September 9, 2013. Since that time, many in the community have kept a small memorial for Butterfield, which has been improved over the past couple of years.

Recently, several individuals and businesses contributed to making the site more parking friendly and safer. The improvements have also included a more permanent sign. Those included Al Bufka, Al Bufka Sr., Al Bufka Construction, Dale Goodrich (retired MSP trooper), Jeff Conklin, Robert Rakowski, Bill Stakenas, Craig Mayo, Scott Lloyd, Ted Aarons (property owner), Curtiss and RuthAnn Berndt, Hardman Construction, Reith Riley, Northwood Signs, Mason County Road Commission, Chuck and Shannon Comstock.
