AMBER TWP. — Law enforcement is searching an area of northeastern Amber Township this afternoon for two suspects involved in a home invasion and dog shooting that occurred late this morning.

According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, the victim then immediately put his vehicle into reverse and attempted to pull out of his driveway, striking another vehicle. “We had a deputy just down the road, at the intersection of U.S. 31 and Hansen Road who was on a traffic stop,” Cole said. “The victim recalled seeing the deputy there and was attempting to return to that location. He also called 911.”

Cole said the first deputy was on scene within two minutes of being dispatched but did not locate a suspect, being described as a black male, about 5-feet, 10-inches wearing a black hoodie and a baseball cap.

The victim, who is black, was not harmed.

The first deputy to respond searched the home and discovered it ransacked, Cole said, and also discovered a dog that had been shot. That dog was transported to Country Veterinarian Clinic in Victory Township.

Cole said another suspect is believed to be involved and they did possibly fled the area on foot into the woods north of the house.

K-9 units from Mason and Lake counties were called immediately as were Scottville and Ludington police departments and Michigan State Police. The U.S. Forest Service also was assisting. Cole said he requested the MSP helicopter from Lansing which is also currently searching the area.

Tactical units are also in the process of conducting a search in the woods.

Cole said anyone who has information should call 911. People should also avoid the area of Hansen Road between U.S. 31 and Gordon Road.
