VICTORY TWP. – On Thurs., Feb. 12, West Shore Community College professors Mike Nagle and Seán Henne will present a lecture on the 1863 Detroit Draft Riot and a poem, entitled, “The Riot”, that was written to commemorate the event.

The lecture begins at 12:30 p.m. in the Center Stage Theater located inside the Arts and Sciences Center.

Nagle, an experienced history instructor at the college, will provide the historical context for the riot and the poem, identifying the riot as one of many that flamed across the country in response to the Enrollment Act of Conscription and as a consequence of racial tension nationwide.

Henne, an instructor in English, will provide the literary context of occasional poems like “The Riot”, poems that try to make sense of and combat violence stemming from intolerance.

Both professors are interested in how discussion of the poem and the riot have significant contemporary relevance given more recent high profile events that have underscored ongoing racial tensions in our country today.

The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the presentation.
